Accepting the award for Best Picture for "Anora" was cast and crew member Darya Ekamasova, Lindsey Normington, Vache Tovmasyan, Karren Karagulian, Alex Coco, Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Samantha Quan, Luna Sofía Miranda, Sean Baker, Drew Daniels, and Yura Borisov onstage during the 97th Annual Oscars at Dolby Theatre on March 02, 2025, in Hollywood, California.

 

Two musicals, a period drama: Emilia Perez with 13 nominations, Wicked and The Brutalist with 10 nominations each—all leading in the nomination race to the 97th annual Academy Awards, which took place on Sunday (March 2) at Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. But most of all among all the nominations, Anora, which opened the night up with six nominations, was the winningest of the night with five trophies. The Sean Baker film won best picture, best director, best actress, original screenplay, and editing.

Pop star and actress Ariana Grande earned her very first Oscar nomination as well (best supporting actress within her role as Glinda in Wicked), while co-star Cynthia Erivo, who played Elphaba, was up for best actress. They lost to Emilia Perez's Zoe Saldana (best supporting actress) and Anora's Mikey Madison (best actress), while Emilia Perez took home the award for best original song for "El Mal."

 

The biopic on Bob Dylan, A Complete Unknown, entered for eight nominations and walked away with a clean slate. Among the nominations: best picture, best actor for Timothée Chalamet's portrayal of the singer-songwriter, best supporting actor for Edward Norton's portrayal of Pete Seeger, and best director for James Mangold.
